After we made our flower paintings we created backgrounds the same way Van Gogh did, with two colors. We mixed the colors using primary colors, and a little white. Then we cute out our water color flowers, glued them tot he background, and added our rhythm and movement lines over the top with oil pastel. Take a look at our final projects.

Van Gogh's Sun Flowers: Still Life study
Step 2: Once we knew how to make rhythm and movement lines, we used our artist
eyes to study the flowers at our desks. We used the crayons to make the rhythm lines. We colored them in with water
colors.
Van Gogh's Sun Flowers: Rhythm and Movement
As Kindergarten students looked at images of Van Gogh's art, we talked a
lot about the vocabulary words Rhythm and Movement. I showed them how
all the swirls in Van Gogh's Starry Nigh make your eye dance
around the painting. We also talked about his little heavy lines and how
that creates a rhythm for the viewer. After looking and talking about
Van Gogh's wonderful paintings we then made some rhythm and movement art
on our own. I covered their tables in brown craft paper and let them
pick up some oil pastels. I made noises as I walked around the
classroom, and the students made marks related to the noises they heard.
Take a look at what we created...
Puppet Party!
After our hard work of adding feathers, foil, beads, and sequins, we finished off our puppet unit with a celebration in the Puppet House. Students got to take turns acting in our Puppet Theater, we ate popcorn, and asked the puppets questions. Here is a pic from our Paper Bag Puppet Show with Kindergarten.
Our Second Graders got to preform with their Show Puppets. We had some very interesting characters: flying cheetahs, muscular cupcake monsters, dancing monkeys, and many, many more.We did get a little video clip- acoustics are not the best, but this is a clip of a puppy, chicken, and monster encounter.

Congratulations to a Kindergarten Artist
One of the Kindergarten art pieces was selected to be a semi-finalist in the PS 2012 Art Competition. I am so excited for him and for his family. Here is the piece that was selected. Keep your fingers crossed for him. Check out the yellow highlights and attention to texture. Hard to believe this was his first time with watercolors.
